Ground Oyster Shells - 50lb

The quality of what you feed your chickens will determine the quality of their yield of eggs.

Your flock’s health can be at serious risk without regular content of oyster shells and grit in their diet. People sometimes confuse grit and oyster shells with having the same function, but that is not the case. Grit is used to stay in their gizzard and grind down their food, whereas oyster shells provide an essential ingredient to the chicken’s diet.

Good Source of Calcium

Calcium is an essential element of diet for most life forms on earth. Hens in their egg-laying stage must be fed oyster shells because they need more calcium than what is available from their regular feed.

Supports Eggshell Integrity

This is the important reason why hens that are about to lay eggs need more calcium. Eggshells are mostly calcium, and for that reason, the nutrient must be supplemented in more than the standard quantity. Oyster shells happen to be an excellent source of this calcium and something that hens also love to have.

Pellet Size for Easy Indigestion

For chickens to quickly eat these shells, they are heat-treated first and then crushed into tiny, pellet-sized bits. Introduce these shells into your flock’s diet by mixing them with their regular feed.

Good for you Chickens

Some people tend to feed the chickens their own eggshells for the same reason; to provide that extra bit of calcium. But research shows that this weakens the chickens, and oyster shells are a better choice.
